Samhain

Life cannot be without Death,

nor the Light without the Dark.

As in spring we embrace the return of the Light and the Life,

so to must we pay homage to the Dark and the Dead.

Tonite I raise my chalice to celebrate the dark and the dead of my Ancestry for without them I would not have known the Light and the Life.

Have a good Samhain my friends.

Cults and Total Institutions

Well as i am going through my course materials for Intro to Sociology the required reading brought me to a section on Erving Goffman. Goffman was a Canadian Sociologist whose early works had him studying life in institutions, IE prisons, and mental health wards. His works brought me back to another subject I had looked at a while ago and that was Cults, and defining what cults were. In that subject matter, I read that studies on Cults were difficult to complete. The reasons are quite understandable, Cults usually are things that are Identified “posthumously,” and no one really goes out and says “Hey we’re a cult come join us.” Cults also evolve over time and do not usually begin as such. I would say they are more like the frog who has been put in a cauldron of water and had water temperature increase slowly and gradually over time until the water is boiling and it is too late for the frog to get out.

This all being said I think the claim that “cults” have not been studied I believe is not entirely true. I believe Goffman’s work on “Asylums: Essays on the Condition of the Social Situation of Mental Patients and Other Inmates” is totally applicable to Cults. I think the only main difference between life in an institution and life in a cult, is the circumstance that brought you there. I believe that as an institutionalized person your overall goal is to get out and back into society as a whole person, whilst the mindset of those who are in a cult would probably be they never want to leave and immerse themselves further and further until mainstream society becomes something they avoid rather than embrace.

Now there are those who are in an institutionalized environment that never want to leave because they have been there so long they are afraid of the outside world we definitely know that there are those who realize they are in an unhealthy environment and once that realization attempt to leave. In either of those cases usually, the transition to normal society is difficult. In these cases what sometimes happens is re-institutionalization or winding up in another cult or perhaps even creating one. There is also the sad situation where the idea of leaving, or the realization they need to leave is so profound that suicides occur.

Neo-Tribalism

“According to Michael Maffesoli, a French sociologist, we are living in “the time of the tribes.” Our world is changing rapidly and is fraught with risk and unpredictability. The foundations of our beliefs and understanding of our history are being challenged and are changing. As individuals, we are seeking out new meanings to our lives and new places to belong.” (paraphrased)

New collectives, or tribes, have emerged says Maffesoli: They are dynamic, fleeting, and “Dionysiac”…..

Is tribalism positive or negative?

With a negative connotation and in a political context, tribalism can also mean discriminatory behavior or attitudes towards out-groups, based on in-group loyalty

Reflections I,ME

Is there no such thing as our true self?
Are we only actors performing roles based on the positions we occupy in society and culture?

As I plod along through this course I cannot but reflect on myself and life over the last many years. Of all topics to come across was that of suicide. I had to briefly ponder that, and how socially we all had our parts to play in that last desperate action of an old friend. It is also interesting to reflect upon the emergence of a community, to be there nearly from the beginning, and to have witnessed where it has gone up to the point where I have departed from it. From a sociological standpoint I now somewhat understand the how’s and why’s and cycles of it.

Right now I am currently working through a module on Socialization and Symbolic interactionism and part of the module was this video. After watching it I had to sit and write this particular post because well it just made me want to sit and reflect for a few and to write. Here is the video and maybe you might need to reflect as well.

Quiz 1 is done

Well first quiz was not due for another few weeks. But I was curious and 3 attempts are alotted per quiz so rather nervously I attempted the first quiz. This quiz was on Karl Marx. 45 minutes are allotted for each attempt. I was done in 10 and hit submit. To my surprise 9/10. I still had two more attempts. I thought I would leave it and looked back at my results. The answer I got wrong only had three possible answers, and I had two more attempts. I was happy with the 90, but I had two more attempts. Should I???? what if the second attempt had completely different questions. Should I? or be satisfied? what if?? OH the Agony…

SO big decision went out for a smoke and came back in the house with mind made up. 90 is good 100 is better….but what if?….shut up paranoid self we are doing this. Boom 100 percent on second attempt. Woot!!!!! second hurdle crossed… should I submit my first essay??? that is the next agony!

Well first assignment done

The first assignment is done.
I am beginning to wonder was I ready for this. Should I have done a “free” course just to get back into the swing of things? This is where I could use some feedback….. really for certain feedback. I have just so many questions that I would feel silly asking the prof about.

Learning environment. I find online learning more challenging than in-class. Online lets me work somewhat to my pace, with the exception of quiz/exam and assignment deadlines and this is awesome because I work nights. The downside I am finding so far is the regular modules are there, but what I find lacking is direction on what should be read for each module from the required textbooks. I suppose this could be a Prof oversight. What I also find lacking is real-time, in-person interactions, and getting to know your peers type of things. This is hilarious considering the course I am taking is “Introduction to Sociology” the online environment has really changed the “social” aspect of learning. It reminds me of an episode of Seaquest 2032 season 2 episode 5. the synopsis of that episode is SeaQuest traveling 200 years into the future to save the last two humans alive. The premise of that episode is that man created a supercomputer that eventually took over all the mundane tasks for humans and eventually became sentient, it continued to take on all tasks, and attempted to alleviate the need for man to do anything. In doing so it created what one would assume would become a utopian society, but in reality, became a dystopian one. A disease forced humanity into seclusion as the computer saw the only way to combat the disease was to limit human interaction. So to allow for interaction the computer created a virtual reality for man to while away his days. Once the disease ran its course humankind no longer had the ability to socialize in the real world. Humanity withered instead. The computer seeing the errors of its ways realized in order to survive it must cease to exist so that humanity could be rekindled.

EEEEEKKKK What Did I do????

ok so maybe a little bit melodramatic here….but holy hell what did I do?!!!!!!!

Well, I will tell me what I did dear boy. You decided to go back to school… yes only taking online courses but something you have wanted to do for years and you never really had the money to spare. This year you did…. and the course that you wanted to take was not full all ready. Yay for you.

So you managed to pay the fee and get the books, get logged into the online portal. You looked at the course outline. nothing major. A few quizzes a short essay, a midterm, and a final assessment. N0 PROBLEMO. As per the instructor’s request, you found the discussion board and introduced yourself. You read a couple of the modules already and looked at the first assignment essay and it is a breaching experiment. COOL BEANS You got this. After performing the breaching experiment you have to write an essay. COOL TAPES You got this. You start writing out the requirements of the essay. Then you got home today and checked the discussion board, there are two new posts on the Q/A part of the board. You read them. A question posed was “does the essay need to be in APA format?” reply from the instructor “Yes it does. ” holy hell APA format??? you “what the Thors hammer is APA format for essays?” Last time you took a college course this was not required.

SO….. thankfully essay is not due for another 10 days… and now not only am I taking this course I am having to relearn how to write an essay college/university style. I think there should have taken a “Back to School for Dummies” course prerequisite for Gen-xs who have been out of school for 27 years. It also appears most of the people who I am taking the course with were just a glint in their parent’s eyes the last time I was in school.

Well, tune back in for more “Lugh Goes to School” stories.

Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening

Whose woods these are I think I know.

His house is in the village though;

He will not see me stopping here

To watch his woods fill up with snow.

My little horse must think it queer

To stop without a farmhouse near

Between the woods and frozen lake

The darkest evening of the year.

He gives his harness bells a shake

To ask if there is some mistake.

The only other sound’s the sweep

Of easy wind and downy flake.

The woods are lovely, dark and deep,

But I have promises to keep,

And miles to go before I sleep,

And miles to go before I sleep.
